Recreation Commission

MISSION

The purpose of the Recreation Commission to promote the general welfare of the community by providing recreational activities for children and other citizens of the Town of Woodstock.

MEETING SCHEDULE

The full Recreation Commission meets monthly, usually on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Special Subcommittee meetings are scheduled as needed. Agendas and minutes are available at the Town Hall and on this website. Meetings are open to the public.

MEMBERSHIP

The Recreation Commission is a five member group created by the Board of Selectmen. The terms of office are two years running concurrently with the Board of Selectmen each municipal election.

We need volunteers. Do you have great ideas? Would you like to see new programs? Do you have a little time? If you would like more information on how to get involved with this fun and dedicated commission, call us at 860-928-6595 ext. 333.

RECREATION NEWS

Woodstock Fuel Assistance Donations: The Woodstock Recreation Commission is pleased to announce that we were able to donate $1,000 from the Memorial Day 10K Road Race proceeds to the Woodstock Fuel Assistance Fund. We donated an additional $700 to the Woodstock Fuel Assistance Fund from the proceeds of our 6th Annual Town Wide Tag Sale. Thank you to our sponsors for those two events, and to everyone who participated. 

New Recreation Park Facility: Located on Senexet Village Road (Behind the Beeches Real Estate off Route 171): Soccer field, walking trail, and basketball court. For more information contact the Recreation Department.

RECREATION PROGRAMS  

HIIT Fitness Class: HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training. Test your limit with this fast-paced class! Over 45 minutes we will work sets followed by active rest. We will use our body weight to work every muscle group and our cardiovascular fitness. Please bring a mat or towel and a water bottle. Classes will be held at the Soccer Field off Senexet Village Road. This summer we will be offering a morning session from 8-8:45am and an evening session from 6-6:45pm on Tuesdays July 7, 14, 21, 28, August 4 and 11 with a rain date scheduled for August 18. Cost to attend is $48 for all 6 weeks or $10 drop-in rate. Click here to download the registration form.

Yoga Summer Session 2 will be held at the Soccer Field off Senexet Village Road. Classes will take place on Saturday mornings from 9:00-10:00am on the following dates: August 8, 15, 22, and 29 (rain date September 12). This class is suitable for all levels of exercisers ages 16 and over. The cost is $35 for 4 classes or a drop-in rate of $10 per class. Click here to download the registration form.

Summer Volleyball Camp: This camp is a great opportunity to learn and develop the proper fundamentals of the game from beginner to varsity level. Courts will be broken down by ability level, coached by high school coaches and collegiate players. Camp will take place at the Woodstock Middle School Sand Volleyball courts from 6-7:30pm on Mondays/Wednesdays July 6th through July 29th (rain date will be Tuesday of each week). Cost to attend is $100 and camp is open to everyone in grades 4 through 12. We will be following all social distancing guidelines set by the State for youth sports. Click here to download the registration form.

Indoor Volleyball Skills Camp: Learn and develop the proper fundamentals of the game from beginner to varsity level. Courts will be broken down by ability level, coached by High School coaches and Collegiate Players. We will be offering two sessions this summer with a limit of 25 kids per session. Camp is open to everyone in grades 4-12 and will run August 17th through the 21st at the Woodstock Academy North Campus Gym. Session 1 runs 5-6:30pm and Session 2 runs 7:30-9pm. Cost to attend is $100 and we will be following all social distancing guidelines set by the State for youth sports. Registration deadline is Monday, August 10th. Events 

Town-Wide Tag Sale: The 8th Annual TOWN-WIDE TAG SALE has been rescheduled to August 29th with a rain date of August 30th. All Woodstock residents, businesses, and organizations may participate. A $15 registration fee will place your location on the tag sale map which will be available for the public to purchase. If you only have a few items to sell, contact the Recreation Department to reserve your spot at the Woodstock Town Hall for $10. Business advertising space is also available on the map at a cost of $25 for standard business card sizeAdvertising is available to all Woodstock residents and area businesses on a first-come, first-served basis. Maps will be available for purchase outside the Town Hall on Tuesday, August 25th and Friday, August 28th from 6-8pm. Maps will also be available the morning of Saturday, August 29th at the Town Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Cost to purchase a map is $2. Deadline to register your spot to be included on the map is August 19th. Summer Concert Series

**All Concerts are free and held at Roseland Cottage from 7-8:30pm**

Stattic the Band: Enjoy a night of great music on Friday, August 14th featuring local musicians from Woodstock Academy. This band offers a refreshing take on Jazz, Swing, Latin, Funk, and Rock music.

Al Fenton Big Band: Join us on Friday, August 21st (rain date August 28th) to enjoy music brought to you by the Al Fenton Big Band, a well-renowned Jazz Band. The group consists of 19 accomplished and dedicated jazz musicians. Honoring and Advancing the Big-Band Jazz Tradition, the mission of the band is to perform music from the “Golden Era of Swing” alongside more modern big-band arrangements of contemporary tunes.

 

Senior Corner

Wii for Seniors

Wii Gaming for Woodstock Seniors: The Wii Gaming System is a fun, interactive program that promotes healthy lifestyles through physical active play. Games include tennis, bowling, golf, and dancing. Games are played on a big screen with the use of hand held controllers. The cost is FREE. Please contact the recreation director to schedule your introductory session. All participants must fill out a waiver of liability prior to using the game system. Click here to download the waiver.

Community Kitchen - Every Monday at noon at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock there is a community kitchen event. Local churches take turns each week preparing and serving a free meal for all guests who come. Meals are served every Monday except Labor Day, Memorial Day, and when Woodstock Public Schools are cancelled due to weather..

Tai Chi - Every Tuesday and Thursday there is a free, informal Tai Chi class offered at the East Woodstock Congregational Church from 10-11 am.

Registration and payment for any program can be mailed to WRC, 415 Route 169, Woodstock CT 06281. Alternatively they can be left in the drop box outside of town hall, in the drop box on the wall next to the Recreation office, or handed to the recreation director.
